Movie Miser
+ Movie Miser
Hey, what's up? I'm Andrew Griffin Muldoon. Some call me Andy, Drew or Griff. 30 years old. I own the movie rental store, Movie Madness. I'm a movie buff and occasionally a comic book nerd. I'm overly goofy and I'll be your best friend. Feel free to leave a love note.

“Nope.” Andrew stood firm, “You’re not paying for these movies, Liv.” He said in a serious tone, he added a smile so she didn’t think he was being rude.

He smiled, “Awesome.”

“You should get a dog or a cat to keep you company.” He nodded towards Mac, “Man’s best friend.” He smiled. He didn’t get many costumers, not lately at least. It was easier for people to just buy movies from the internet. He didn’t mind though, he kept generally busy and did have a few loyal costumers and friends who visited often.

“Ugh!” she grunted jokingly, tossing the card back into her purse. “Someday you’re gonna open your mailbox and I’ll have stuffed it with cash.” Liv glared at him and then laughed, resting her chin in her hand.

She nodded at looked at the dog, making a quick whistling noise to call him over. She bent and scratched Mac’s head, petting him and playing with him. “I’ve considered it. Keith said he’d get me one if I really wanted, but he’s convinced we both work too much to take care of a little guy.”

Sighing, she stood again and rested her arms back on the counter. “He can be a little bit stubborn,” she made a face.

“I surely hope you wouldn’t do that.” He laughed.

He watch Liv closely as she showed Mac more attention. “You know, Keith couldn’t object if the dog or cat was a gift.” He flashed a mischievous smile. “Or, maybe it just appeared on your doorstep?” He chuckled.

“Maybe I will,” she threatened.

Liv laughed and covered her face, sure that she must have looked unattractive. “Oh no,” she insisted. “He’s a sucker for puppies, but he’d spend forever fretting about it, the big baby. We’d end up taking it to an animal shelter.”

She could imagine the look that would be on Keith’s face if someone left a dog on their porch. He already spent tons of time working, so knowing that he’d have a dog to take care of as well as a wife when he got home every day would be exhausting for him. Olivia laughed again at the thought.

“Is it bad that I actually considered that for a second just to see the look on his face?”

Andrew had the image of a large amount of dollar bills falling out of his mailbox. He cringed slightly, “I’d rather you not.” He chuckled.

He laughed along with her, “Oh no. I’d hope you’d bring the pup by my place before you did that.” He smiled, “Maybe I’ll get a friend for Mac and we’ll mess with him. I’ll leave the pup on your door step and make him think it’s his… Then, you can just bring it back by my place.” He paused, “Sounds like a win-win to me.” He grinned.

“Fine,” she pointed a stern finger at him. “But you better expect a nice Christmas present this year.” Either way, Liv was going to make it up to him. She loved giving gifts and seeing people happy, and sh’d already planned on buying Andy a Christmas gift, so it wasn’t a stretch to say it would be something nice.

Olivia laughed and nodded her head. “Oh, man, I’d do that in a heartbeat if he wasn’t so stressed out already. I think I’m just gonna have to torture him with these,” she tapped the movies with her finger. “He’d have an absolute heart attack and I’d have to pay him back in cookies and cupcakes and cake for weeks. Months, maybe. Then he’d have another one from all the sweets. Or he’d get diabetes or something.”

Andrew held up his hands in surrender, “Whatever you say.”

He shook his head. “I don’t wanna send the poor guy into shock.” He laughed, “I can’t picture Keith with a belly. He’s too tall… I think his metabolism is too good for all that.”

“No way.” He refused shaking his head, “You only owe me like 300 dollars… why start paying now?” He teased with a grin. “Seriously though, not a problem.” He assured her.

“Darn.” He muttered half jokingly, “That’s cool though.” He said with a nod. “How’s the shop?” He asked “I was just telling Keith how I needed to stop by.”

“Oh, God, now I feel bad!” Liv laughed, shoving his shoulder. “Seriously though, mister, take the card. Don’t worry, it’s on Keith. He’s got plenty cash to go around,” she grinned.

Liv shrugged. “Yeah, I wish it were true, though,” she admitted. She would love to have a child, but it wasn’t something that was going to happen until both she and Keith were ready for it. “You’ll be one of the first to know when it does happen, though,” she assured Andy.

“It’s good,” she replied. “Same as ever. Nothing’s changed much. You should! It gets lonely sometimes.” And it did, if she was honest. She had her fair share of customers that came to get things daily, but there was always those days when things slowed down and were quiet, leaving her with a book and coffee.

He shook his head, “On the house.” He smiled. He was nearly positive Liv would object to that but he’d just continue to tell her no. He didn’t like making his friend’s pay for rentals, he often avoided it if he could.

“We?” Andrew asked raising an eyebrow, “Are you pregnant? Who’s we?” He asked somewhat confused. He secretly hoped she was, her and Keith would make such great parents.

“Oh, come on, I must owe you a ton of money by now,” she said, trying to hand Andy the card. He was always letting her rent movies for free, and she felt bad, because he was probably losing precious income.

Her eyes widened and she laughed. “Oh, God, no. Keith would go into a coma if I was. He’s terrified of having children. I just meant me and him,” Liv answered. It reminded her of their conversation the past week about having a child and she sighed. “Yeah, no, that won’t happen any time soon.”

Andrew half smiled, shaking his head at Liv as she took a moment to show Mac some attention.

He placed the movies in front of her. “I’m surprised he hasn’t called up here and told me not to let you rent anymore.” Andrew laughed, “I wouldn’t do that to you though.” He assured her. “I’m alright, a bit tired, but overall I’m swell,” He smiled “And how’re you?” He wondered taking another sip of his tea.

“Oh, he will someday. And he’ll offer to pay you big money, trust me,” Olivia laughed in reply. She picked up the movies and scanned her eyes over the cases, not really reading them. After looking them over, she opened up her purse and took out her wallet. “How much do I owe you this time?” she asked, looking down to grab her debit card.

She sighed and then smiled. “Well, today’s been weird, but we’ve been good lately,” Liv answered. She realized that since being married, she’d spoken for herself and Keith when asked a question rather than just herself.

He shook his head, “On the house.” He smiled. He was nearly positive Liv would object to that but he’d just continue to tell her no. He didn’t like making his friend’s pay for rentals, he often avoided it if he could.

Andrew heard the bell go off for the door and peered up from his comic. He smiled, seeing that it was Liv who entered the store. Mac ran over to greet her, “Down Mac.” He commanded shaking his head. “Sorry” He muttered.

“What can I do you for Livi?” He asked still smiling. He placed his bookmark in the comic, closed it and placed it off to the side. “Come to pick up your movies?” He wondered grabbing Pride and Prejudice and Gone With The Wind from the stack set aside as requests.

“Heya, sweetheart,” she grinned, bending down to play with the dog momentarily. “It’s okay,” Liv smiled up at Andy and stood again.

She watched him as he moved to grab two movies and she nodded. “Yep. Been a while since I’ve tortured Keith with a good movie,” Olivia answered jokingly. She stepped up to the counter and placed her elbows on it. “How’ve you been?”

Andrew half smiled, shaking his head at Liv as she took a moment to show Mac some attention.

Andrew sat behind the clerk desk of the movie store, comic book sitting in front of him and a sweet tea off to the side. It had been a slow day, he didn’t mind it much. He’d brought Mac to work to him, keeping him pretty good company. He sorted through a few stacks of new DVDs, holding back the ones he was saving for friends and putting the rest on the shelves. He glanced up from the comic book and took a long sip of the tea before returning to his reading.

Liv had had a long, lazy day and it was only around five that she realized she had yet to pick up the movies from Andy. After much internal debate over whether to break her extremely comfortable curled up position on the couch, she’d finally gotten up and turned off the TV. She pulled her hair up to make it slightly more presentable and changed clothes, but only into sweats.

The drive to the movie store was quick, and she stepped out of her car, shutting and locking the door behind her. She entered the store and smiled at the man behind the counter. “Hey, Andy,” she greeted.

Andrew heard the bell go off for the door and peered up from his comic. He smiled, seeing that it was Liv who entered the store. Mac ran over to greet her, “Down Mac.” He commanded shaking his head. “Sorry” He muttered.
